June 10 - July 8Free
A solo exhibition with Maikel Sotomayor
10 June to 8 July at the Löwengalerie, Lucerne
A quick guide to the happiness of travel in times of non-travel. Stopping time. Immerse. A brush trip into imaginary worlds of travel. Seeing. Marvel. Enjoy.
"La dicha del viajero" or in German "Das Glück des Reisenden" reminds us wistfully of the days when travelling was the most normal thing in the world for us. Today, for most people, it is anything but easy just to be able to leave one's country. Most borders are closed, the hurdles to travel are high. It has been the same for decades for the vast majority of Cubans.
Since his childhood, Maikel has dreamed of travelling, of discovering foreign worlds and cultures. Since this is not possible, he takes refuge in his own dream world and transfers his mental escape images with the drawing pencil and brush. In his imagination, the unknown takes shape and condenses on paper and canvas into a new reality he has invented. He studies art for many years, learning the craft from scratch. He organizes himself a bicycle and begins to take short trips to rural Cuba.
These new impressions overwhelm him and mix in his works with earlier dreamed. An interaction arises that influences and overlaps each other. This overlapping continues in his works, which he applies layer upon layer. Deeper layers oscillate through layers above them, creating an involuntary attraction in the viewer that analogously builds stronger and stronger. These are "quiet" works for which one must take time. Those who do so will be richly rewarded. I am pleased to introduce Maikel Sotomayor, the young Cuban magician, to you personally on the occasion of the vernissage on 10 June.
